Early Childhood AT

1 . What are some considerations when selecting AT for early childhood?  - Picking AT is about the specific needs of the child.   - The process that the Dell texts uses to describe the selection of AT is the SETT framework. That at first not every technology will work, we go by the student's interest and abilities, conducting an IEP meeting, considering the pre-requisites as needed, and re-evaluating as well. (Dell, 2017) 2. What is the one tool you found to be useful?  - A mechanic timer to let students in the classroom know when to switch centers and all of other transitional events occurring during the day.  3. How would you implement this tool?  - Explain to the students about the mechanic timer and what it is used for. Set timer for 10 minutes during center time. After 10 minutes, the students will switch centers and do another 10 minutes.  4. Where would you find this tool? What is the cost?  - Amazon, Walmart, Target, and any c...

Blog/Website Assignment 10

What are some issues for accessibility online?  - The most common issues that can occur for accessibility online are: * Not enough information to discuss a topic, gets off topic. * Gets off topic by being over descriptive. * No text provided to describe a image, resulting in the photo being read to the patient.  * Improper labels or no provided labels. * Link areas are too small making it easy to overlook the link. * Poor color contrast. * Provided documents are not accessible (PDFs)  (TBGi, 2022).  What are some resources for teachers on accessibility?  -  Teach access offers teaching resources teachers can use for courses, curriculum development grants, and study away programs in Silicon Valley for faculty and students to learn about accessibility skills and career opportunities (Teach access, 2023).   Teach Stone provides resources and keeping up the professionalism by taking different courses to improve on teaching (Teach Stone, n.d)....

Behavior AT

Image
Behavior is a way a person reacts in response to a particular situation or  stimulus. At my preschool I work at, there is positive and negative ways children handle each situation.  The four main functions of behavior are: " Attention: behavior that seeks attention or recognition from others.   Escape or avoidance: behavior that seeks to escape or avoid something uncomfortable or unpleasant.   Access to tangible items or activities: behavior that seeks access to tangible items or preferred activities.   Sensory stimulation: behavior that seeks sensory input or stimulation, such as rocking or hand-flapping" (Lightner, n.d).     "Reinforcement is the science of decision making" (Verma, 2021). The difference between positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement  is the way you reinforce any type of behavior. Positive reinforcement is designed to encourage a positive behavior to the child. This can be done by offering prizes, rewards, ...

Math Support

Image
The grade I am choosing to discuss math support resources is Kindergarten. I would write a letter to the parents and suggest a conference. Here are the standards for kindergarten for the three areas which are number sense, computations, and word problems.                                                                             Website: Florida Standards  Description: It is Florida official source for standards and official course descriptions. It helps educators all over Florida on what to teach in each grade level and it even gives resources and guides on how to teach the courses required.   Here is a letter I would send out to the families in my classroom as additional information on guidance for children who may need math support....

Handwriting AT

The writing assistive device that I am selecting is the pencil grip. A pencil grip is a tool that supports grip between fingers and pencil in order to establish proper grip strength. The pencil grip focuses on the prewriting, drafting, and reviewing/editing processes in the writing processes.           Pros:  Help a student control the pencil better.  Form a proper pencil grasp.  Work on fine motor skills.        It is large and cushy.  The size can help maintain the thumb web space.  A comfortable way to hold a pencil.                             Cons:  May be too big.  The silicone texture makes kids want to chew on it.  Gives stabilization of the pinky side of the hand.  Feels restrictive to write with the pencil held back.  Uncomfortable around the wrist.  Limit needed movement for control.    I ...

AAC Devices for Children

Image
The purpose of an AAC device in the school setting is to allow the child to express themselves without needing to verbalize, if unable to. Some conditions that would benefit from an AAC device include: Intellectual disabilities, Autism, mute disorders, brain injuries (shaken baby syndrome), cerebral palsy, and other injuries/disabilities that cause emotional or communication issues (Felton, 2022).    My Low Tech option is called an emotion board which is for children who have difficulty expressing their emotions, this emotion board is a way for students to show teachers how they are feeling so teachers know how to properly handle the situation. For example if a child is upset but it is because he/she is hungry, they point to the upset and hungry emotion (ASHA, 2023). This can be used outside the classroom as well, an example with recess is when the teacher sees a kid sitting by themselves and ask why, the child can show them how they are feeling and the teacher can fig...

Assistive Technology and the Law

  1. When should assistive technology be considered?  - Assistive technology should be considered when the students are having difficulty learning in the classroom and have impairments that is stopping them from performing classroom activities independently. Some examples include sensory impairments including deaf and blind (Pacer, 2023).  2. What are some laws that govern assistive technology?   Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  - ADA puts law that prohibits discrimination and encourages use of assistive devices if necessary. This Act provides equal opportunities everywhere.   Individuals with disabilities act (IDEA)  - Children with disabilities are not to be discriminated and allow access to public schools.  Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act  - Allows access to all electronic assistive technology of any kind.  Assistive Technology Act of 1998  - This law is meant to help families by giving funds to as...
