I believe young children learn through play. As part of their growth and development, learning through play is very effective for many reasons. Young children can increase their motor skills, develop language, learn real life situations through dramatic play, explore scientific theories, sort objects mathematically, get an understanding of different emotions, use self-control, gain a positive self-concept, and an interest in social studies. (multicultural). Best of all, the children won't even know they are learning because they are interested in the activity. When the activities are planned for each center that is purposeful and developmentally appropriate for the age group; the possibilities are endless.
Based on the children learning through play, I believe in actively watching the children at all times. Checking each individual center to make sure everyone is understanding the activity that has been provided. If not, teach them individually about how the activity works. Get to know each child and bond with them. I believe in smiling, being silly, and getting creative with the kids. Being a teacher can be so much fun and the children will love it that their teacher is sharing a learning experience with them. I also have a role in teaching them different domains by figuring out on how they learn. Whether it is auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or writing. Based on the way they learn; I need to find a teachable moment. I always look out for any signs of child abuse, neglect, developmental delay, and disability. If I suspect of any of this, it is my duty to report it to the Child Abuse Hotline or FDLRS/Child Find and address the situation immediately.
Beyond being their teacher and caregiver, what is most important to me is to make sure they have their basic needs in place. In order to effectively be a successful teacher I need to meet their individual, cultural, and age appropriateness. My role is to learn and appreciate each and every family. I would also help the families as well by providing any current links related to childcare, nutritional benefits, and useful techniques for practicing education at home. I believe in a happy, loving, family environment, so I will help the parents/guardians any way I can.
The activities I will use to engage with my VPK students are the oil and water as a subject for science. This will teach my students that oil and water do not mix and why. Emergent literacy skills that cover subjects reading and writing. Teaching them tracing lines, copying lines, sounding out letters, and more. The sensory box I made contains upper and lowercase letters that my students will have to match. After they match the upper and lowercase letters, they will need to write the letters down on paper. Plus, the sensory box is fun for my students to play in. It contains ocean animals, and blue and green rice. Social skills will be taught in a jeopardy game where my students will work in groups to learn the value of teamwork. A fun and educational game with 5 categories about what my students has learned throughout the school year. A fingerplay to test my student's listening skills. I like myself portrait to boost my student's self-esteem, confidence, and fine motor skills. These are just a few examples of the fun activities I have planned to teach my students each important skill.
